The Power of Authenticity

Authenticity is the quality of being authentic. Definitions of authentic are: 1. Worthy of acceptance or belief as conforming to or based on fact. 2. Not false or imitation: real, actual. 3. True to one’s own personality, spirit, or character.

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said, "Never lose sight of your most valuable asset, the most valuable asset you possess: your personal integrity." Nicole Torres in a Harvard Business Review Article cited that feeling authentic at the office has been linked to higher engagement, higher workplace satisfaction, better performance and better overall wellbeing.

I believe authenticity can facilitate diversity in the workplace as people bring their uniqueness, cultural and life experiences, personality and skills to assignments and projects, providing a different perspective and viewpoint. Business to Business Marketing Strategist, James T. Noble put it this way, being authentic means staying true to who you are, what you do and who you serve. In an environment in which more human elements matter it creates value and benefits for your followers as well as improving your business.

Some challenges to being authentic is our environment. It could be those close to you, co-workers, friends, the media. We feel pressure to conform in ways that don’t reflect our core values, or we find ourselves doing things that don’t line up with our goals and aspirations.

To stay on track, it is imperative that you find and foster your authenticity. Your loved ones can help in this regard. Parents, I believe, have a good understanding of what their children do well. I have provided some questions to help you pinpoint what authenticity means to you. What is it that you do automatically? Something you do without thinking about. Something that comes naturally to you. Something that you would do for free. Are you an exceptional listener? Are you always asking questions, perhaps with a desire to make things better or improve a process? Do you seek collaboration or bringing people/family together? Do you have leaning toward establishing community? Ask a close friend what you do well.

Understanding and cultivating the qualities that make you unique is important to your career and personal advancement. Being authentic is something you can build on. Recognize that it is the everyday change or contribution that will make the difference. I want to encourage you that your ability, credentials, and stature helps to deliver your authenticity.
